What We Are

A Think Tank for Adaptable Music

The Creative Repertoire Initiative is a collective of composers and conductors committed to creating adaptable music for ensembles — formed in response to the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our Role

Not a Publisher. Not a Clearinghouse.

CRI is not a clearinghouse, distributor, or publisher. Instead, we function as a collaborative think tank: exploring compositional approaches that help ensembles thrive under shifting circumstances. We advocate for composers who embrace adaptability and share their discoveries openly.

The Creative Repertoire Initiative emerged from a moment of profound disruption, when music educators and ensemble directors faced unprecedented uncertainty. Rather than retreating from these challenges, a collective of composers and conductors chose to reimagine what repertoire could become. They envisioned music that bends and stretches to accommodate shifting ensemble sizes, variable instrumentation, and evolving rehearsal constraints. This is not about lowering artistic standards but about expanding the very definition of what a performance can be. Adaptability becomes a creative virtue rather than a compromise, opening doors for ensembles to maintain their musical identity even when circumstances change unexpectedly.

At its core, the CRI functions as a collaborative think tank rather than a traditional publisher or distributor. The collective explores compositional approaches that prioritize flexibility without sacrificing artistic integrity. Composers experiment with modular scoring, open instrumentation, improvisational elements, and electronic components that allow works to transform across different performing contexts. These explorations are shared openly with the broader music community, creating a growing body of resources that directors can draw upon. The goal is to equip conductors and educators with repertoire that responds dynamically to the realities of their particular ensemble situations.

Central to the initiative's mission is advocacy for composers who embrace adaptability as a fundamental part of their creative process. These creators are actively engaged with questions of access and inclusion, recognizing that flexible repertoire can empower student musicians at varying ability levels. By amplifying voices that prioritize resilience and responsiveness in their work, the CRI helps shift the conversation around contemporary ensemble music. The collective champions the idea that compositional craft and pedagogical sensitivity are not opposing forces but complementary elements that enrich the musical experience for everyone involved, from first-year players to seasoned performers.

The initiative provides practical resources such as templates and sample scores that demonstrate adaptable scoring techniques in action. These materials serve as both inspiration and guide for directors seeking to expand their programming horizons. The community built around the CRI connects composers with conductors who share a commitment to flexible, responsive music-making. Through these partnerships, new works are conceived with adaptability built into their DNA from the very first sketch. The result is a growing repertoire that honors the traditions of wind band, orchestra, and choral music while boldly embracing the unpredictable nature of live performance in a changing world.
